As the 1950s draw to a close, Sicily is a place of extreme poverty and underdevelopment. Vito, the Licata family’s eldest son, decides to move to a small town in Liguria, in the northwest of Italy. He and his family leave to seek their fortune in the hope of ensuring a more dignified life for his mother and siblings. There, the Licatas make their home in one of the most run-down neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city, along with the hundreds of other immigrants who flock there. Vito and his family come up against a ruthless and hostile society that they couldn’t have been prepared for; a society that refuses to accept them and that discriminates against them at every turn.
